COL91´ó»ÆѼBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri System will sponsor a leadership program for a group of top graduate students from all four campuses beginning tomorrow on the Columbia campus. The Graduate Student Leadership Program (GSLP) was established to complement the professional development of the graduate students taking part with specialized leadership and transferable skills training.
The first session of the program will be tomorrow afternoon, February 13th, at Memorial Union, continuing Friday morning at the Courtyard Marriott in Columbia.
The GSLP originated with the Graduate Deans of the 91´ó»ÆѼ System, with an aim of enhancing the students’ transferrable skills, or high-demand skills that employers seek across academic, business, government, non-profit and industry sectors. The program contains five significant themes: 1.) Leadership style and theory; 2.) Management and Organization; 3.) Problem Solving; 4.) Communication Skills; and 5.) Creativity and Entrepreneurship.
As part of the program, each 91´ó»ÆѼ System campus selects a team of five graduate students to receive the specialized training. Team members are required to participate in monthly seminars on their respective campuses and travel to the other campuses for extended training. 91´ó»ÆѼ System leadership approved the program and provided a grant to each of the four campuses to launch GSLP.
The professional development program is designed to complement mentoring by graduate faculty members and the students’ discipline-specific course work, lab hours and independent research.
